How Prestige Property Owners Are Creating Fully-Automated Homes

With smart technology, a curated, low-maintenance luxury lifestyle is increasingly possible with the touch of an app.

It’s the futurist version of enjoying all the comforts of a top-tier home without lifting more than a finger, literally, or even using only voice control.

The secret is wiring and software that uses artificial intelligence and internet connectivity to allow systems and appliances to communicate with other networked devices.

While much has been made of the enhanced security or energy-saving aspects of smart homes – switching off appliances automatically when you leave home or using digital door locks that can be opened through an app – the more creative uses of new technology are capturing the imagination of premium clients.

“You have one, remote master controller, or you use an app on your phone, or voice control, and with systems such as SAVANT you can create different moods and conditions in every room or level of your house,” says Alex Smith of CSA Architects.

Hosting an important soiree? Ask Alexa to execute a ‘dinner party’ theme that dims the lights, streams a sophisticated playlist to your patio or living room, controls the air-conditioning, and pre-heats the oven for hors d’oeuvres. And while home automation can’t actually select the perfect vintage for you, a smart wine cellar allows you to maintain meticulous temperature control.

Craving a restorative night in after a long-haul flight? Cue a “relaxation theme” to effortlessly heat the towel rail, spa pool or infrared sauna, and bring the screen, projector and surround sound of your home theatre system to life so you can enjoy your favourite show.

“Whether it’s ‘party’ or ‘welcome home’, you have the ability to create a scene that integrates smart functions together,” says Amit Segev, of Switch Home Automation. “It’s all about being creative and coming up with new solutions. You can literally automate anything.”

Other ideas: coffee makers that switch on when you wake up, smart air purifier settings that adjust automatically based on air quality readings, climate-controlled garages for luxury cars and even automated water features and fire pits.

Now, and in the future, ultimate luxury means no digits required.
